As the Old adage goes, “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!” We are creatures of habit, and it often can take multiple attempts when trying new things, food included. Use the New Year as an opportunity to add in some healthy new options to your menu!
Here are some tips and tricks to get started:
1. Pick a Theme Having a theme can make things more fun and help guide the meal! From the sea: Been meaning to add more fish into your routine, head to the grocery store and see the catch of the day. In season: Head to the produce section and see what local fruits and vegetables are available
2. Recipe Redo Pick a family favorite and switch out one ingredient for something new. Lighten up burgers with a 93% lean ground turkey. Try riced cauliflower or brown rice in a stir-fry.
3. Around the World Pick a new cuisine to try (Thai, Greek, Cajun, Indian etc.) and try a recipe to fit!
4. Dealer’s Choice Each week before making your shopping list choose a member of the family to pick a new food item. This can also help with picky eaters to feel more involved in the food choices and more willing to try the new foods that they picked out!
5. Make a Rainbow Try to see if throughout the month you can eat a new food from each of the colors of the rainbow, choosing produce makes this easier. Try these: red lentil chili, orange butternut squash soup, stuffed yellow peppers, add green baby spinach to a sandwich, top your Greek yogurt with blueberries, swap out lasagna noodles for thinly sliced and grilled indigo eggplant, and add in some violet/purple carrots to a healthy soup recipe!
6. Different Day, Different Way Pick one new food to try a variety of ways throughout the week! Try changing up the preparation method: raw, steamed, sautéed, grilled, etc., or spice it up by adding in different seasonings!
